What a small business website actually costs

Pick what you need. The numbers come from what building and running these sites costs us, measured on our own platform, next to what agencies and freelancers charge for the same scope.

What you need
On Ontfly
$1.55 (31 credits)

Covered by the $39/month plan, which includes 600 credits. Hosting and TLS are included; a domain is about $1.20 a month on top.

Measured on our own builds

  • Median generation time: 0.1 seconds, over 1,146 builds in the last 90 days.
  • Median design pass: 7.7 seconds, over 60 runs.
  • Median model tokens per build: 424,347, which is what the build charge above is metered on.

Recomputed 2026-08-27. These are our numbers, not an industry average: a machine doing this is cheaper than a person doing it, and the comparison that matters is in the write-up rather than on this page.

How to use it

  1. Choose the type of site and the pieces you need.
  2. The estimate updates as you change it.
  3. Every figure links to how it was measured.

What it looks at

  • Build cost, measured from our own generation runs rather than quoted.
  • The recurring parts nobody includes in the headline price: domain, hosting, and the cost of changing something after launch.
  • Published agency and freelance ranges for the same scope, cited.

What it will not tell you

Worth reading before the results, because a check that quietly skipped something is worse than one that says it did.

  • Our build numbers are ours. They are what this platform costs to run, not an industry average, and they are lower than a person doing the same work by hand because a machine is doing it.
  • Any figure computed over too few runs is hidden rather than shown with a caveat, because a median of three is not a median.
  • Agency ranges are quoted from public pricing pages, not from jobs we bought.

Questions

Why is your build number so much lower than an agency quote?

Because it is a different thing being measured. Ours is the compute and model cost of generating a site. An agency quote includes people: discovery, design rounds, project management, and someone to call. Both numbers are on the page for that reason.

What is the ongoing cost?

A domain is roughly a coffee a month. Hosting for a small business site is usually free at this size. The cost that surprises people is changes: on most builds, editing a page after launch means paying whoever built it.

Do these numbers change?

They are recomputed from live data on a schedule, and the date they were last computed is printed on the page.

Ontfly builds the site, puts it on a domain and runs what sits behind it. If this turned up something worth fixing, describe your business and see what it makes.
